Essential Drugs
Company Limited (EDCL) is a 100% state owned Pharmaceuticals
Company in Bangladesh. In the year 1962 it was functioning
under the then Central Government in the name & style
of Government Pharmaceuticals Laboratory (GPL) and subsequently
it was renamed as Pharmaceuticals Production Unit (PPU) in
the year 1979. In the interest of Public Health & smooth
running of the organization, it was registered as a Public
Limited Company under the Company’s Act-1994. The Ministry
of Health & Family Welfare of Bangladesh is its controlling
authority. Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL) is a Joint–Stock
company with a fully paid-up capital of TK: 882.55 lac It
was established in 1983 with the main objective of setting
up an advanced pharmaceuticals industry in the Country for
the local production of medicines and to supply these products
inside the Country for public health and for Export. EDCL
has developed a strong position in Bangladesh in Govt. Sector
and is well positioned to sustain its growth and have a sound
platform to serve export markets.
It's main objective
is to manufacture quality drugs at an affordable price &
supply to the Government Hospital and other Health Institutions.
Since the inception of its production the company has been
supplying Essential Drugs to the Government Hospitals, Civil
Surgeon’s Offices, Health Institutions of Government,
Non-Government and International (Non-profit makings) Organizations
like UNICEF, WHO, ICDDRB etc. At present the company has been
producing 155 Essential Drugs with a sales target of Taka
1100 Million in the Financial Year 2008-09, its present manpower
is 682 in Dhaka Factory.
In the year 1985 another unit by name
Essential Drugs Company Limited, Bogra was established at
Japanese Grant. It has also been supplying Essential Drugs
to the Government Hospitals, Civil Surgeon’s Offices
in Northern & Southern Districts of the Country. Its present
manpower is 345.
This Company has
been expanding very rapidly to serve Health Sector. Cephalosporin
Project- it’s another unit in Bogra will go for commercial
production soon. Its production capacity per hour is 18,000
Vials.
With a view to population
control, Bangladesh Government has established a condom factory
in Khulna named as Khulna Essential Latex Prokolpo (KELP)
as another unit of Essential Drugs Company Limited. Production
capacity of this project has been primarily installed at 150
Million pcs per annum. The entire production will be consumed
by the Directorate General, Family Planning, Government of
Bangladesh.

licensed from Bangladesh Govt. of Population control program
in the country. The excess production will be exported.

EDCL caters the
requirement of even remote areas very effectively through
Govt. Hospitals, Civil Surzons offices and Community Clinics.
Conclusion:
EDCL is a successful
joint stock company in Govt. sector. Its financial performance
over 18 years of operation is praiseworthy in private and
public sector.
