Prof. (Dr.) Ehsanul Kabir

Prof. (Dr.) On October 22, 2014, Ehsanul Kabir was named Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL) by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in medicine from the esteemed Dhaka Medical College and a postgraduate degree in dermatology from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). He finished his fellowship on HIV/AIDS and STD prevention and control at the University of Alabama , USA in 1999.


He has served as Treasurer of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) for the past five (5) years. He was previously an executive member of the Bangladesh Private Medical Practitioners Association (BPMPA). He is well known for playing both executive and on-field roles in the medical fraternity and for being an active member of it.


Reputably, he has served in both executive and on-field capacities within the medical community. In addition to organizing and leading multiple workshops on novel pharmaceutical products and attending multiple WHO-organized seminars and conferences, he has published and presented numerous scientific papers in national and international journals.

While working for various NGOs in Bangladesh, he acquired substantial experience in the prevention and control of STDs and HIV/AIDS. He also has nine (9) years of experience practicing medicine in Iran and Africa. Dr. Kabir was the head of the dermatology department at Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital, a prestigious medical facility in Bangladesh, prior to being appointed CEO.

Dr. Kabir wants to strengthen EDCL's dedication to provide pharmaceuticals that are unwavering in terms of quality and affordability. Under his direction, EDCL opened its third plant in Gopalganj. Khulna plant (KELP) and Latex plant (ELPP) both are providing services of the highest standard of latex for daily usage to commoners .

In addition to producing various IV infusions, the plant also produces iron, hormonal, and penicillin medications. He wants to expand the manufacturing line to include medical rubber goods like gloves, syringes, rubber corks, etc. As the government has officially announced him to create the first vaccine plant that provides  cost – effective vaccines (HPV, JE ,TCV,MCV, COVID-19, TD-10, CHOLERA , INFLUENZA , POLIO , PENTA ,PCV-10 , DENGUE, MR ,BCG-20, BOPV -10 , ROTAVIRUS , JE , HPV) all across Bangladesh . Globally recognized International Vaccine Institute (IVI) has appointed Dr. Kabir as their honorable newest Board of Trustee (BOT) member in 2023 . He believes that joining IVI aligns our commitment to advancing global health initiatives , particularly in the areas of vaccine research , development and distribution . By participating IVI activities , we aim to contribute to the global effort in ensuring availability of safe , effective and affordable vaccines for all .


According to Dr. Kabir, EDCL is the most cutting-edge pharmaceutical company in Bangladesh, dedicated to offer reasonably priced medications both domestically and abroad. Medicine is exported by EDCL to Bhutan and SriLanka. In the upcoming years, significant progress will be made in establishing exports to Africa and other parts of Europe. EDCL is aware that the success of the company is largely due to its highly valued workforce. By enhancing working conditions, increasing incentives, and developing new job categories within EDCL, the CEO hopes to advance the initiative.
